When you create an “original work” of a creative nature, whatever the mode or form of expression, you immediately become its author and acquire the copyright without any kind of formal action.
However, claiming this right and the powers that belong to you as an author is greatly facilitated by filing the work with the competent offices: they can provide you with certain proof of authorship and the date of creation of the work.
Registration also provides you with a stronger claim to a copyright on your works when defending against plagiarism and exercising the exclusive right for the economic use of creations through their reproduction, performance, dissemination, distribution and development.

How long does a copyright last? Is a copyright perpetual or limited?
A copyright comprises a bundle of rights, which can be divided into two categories: moral rights and economic exploitation rights.
The moral rights (e.g. the right to authorship of the work or its integrity) do not expire.
Conversely, the economic exploitation rights (e.g. reproduction and dissemination of the work) have a time limit, as they last for the author’s entire life and for 70 years thereafter unless otherwise surrendered or sold. After this period, these rights become public domain.
Is it necessary to register one’s work with the SIAE (Italian Society of Authors and Publishers) in Italy?
Copyright arises at the moment a work is created, as a particular expression of a person’s intellectual work. Therefore, registration with the SIAE is not in itself necessary to give rise to the right.
Rather, registration, which is optional, is instrumental among other things in protecting one’s copyright, especially since it provides documentary evidence of the authorship of the work and its date of creation.
When is the copyright © symbol used?
The circled C symbol informs third parties that the work it is affixed on is copyrighted and therefore legally protected. If combined with the author’s name, it also communicates the authorship of the work.
